Day 8 post 2:
The Scenario: You manage a large group of employees at a Web Development company. One of your responsibilities is to evaluate the performance of your employees. Recently, Timothy Elam, your most senior employee, has been performing poorly. He reported to work late twelve times in the past month—on four days he was over two hours late. His work has severely decreased in quality and quantity. In fact, Timothy doesn’t seem at all interested in his work. In recent years, he was a model employee. Just two years ago, he won the award for “Most Productive Employee.” Because Timothy is popular, his coworkers picked up his share of the work for several weeks; but they are no longer willing to carry his share. They are tired of Timothy’s lateness and inadequate performance.
As you prepare to evaluate Timothy, you wonder what has caused his performance to decline. You realize that his fellow employees have legitimate complaints about having to carry his share of the load; but you also realize that until recently Timothy was a valuable employee. You decide to let your manager know about the problem. Your manager will be especially concerned because Timothy is one of her favorite employees.
The Assignment: Write a memo to your manager, Susan Smith, (following the format), describing Timothy’s performance and the morale problem that his performance is creating in your group. Suggest some course of action, or ask your manager for suggestions. Remember to keep the good will and respect of your manager while specifically explaining the problems that Timothy’s performance is causing.
Please post your memo here.
